How to Create the Perfect Puppy-Friendly Home Environment

Adopting a puppy is a joyous experience for many families, but it can also be stressful given their penchant to get up to all kinds of mischief. It takes some work, but with just a few simple changes, you can remove visible dangers and create a cozy environment. Follow these simple tips and create a perfect home for you and your puppy.

See Your Home the Way a Puppy Sees It

A phone charger hanging next to your sofa or shoes by your door can all be appealing to a teething puppy.  Remove everything that can be chewed, swallowed, or broken by your dog. Important things to look out for include:

  • Electrical wires

  • Small objects

  • Medication

  • Cleaning products

Do not forget about some indoor plants as well, as some of them could be toxic to your dog.

Choose Pet-Friendly Floors for Your Home

Puppies can be messy, and you will likely have to deal with muddy footprints, spilled water, and accidents. Runners and washable rugs are a good way to make your floors cleanable while giving your puppy more grip. This is especially important with small puppies. Don’t Forget Mental Stimulation

Having a dog-friendly house is not enough to ensure your puppy’s safety. It should also be interesting and stimulating for your puppy’s mind. Dogs naturally like to learn and discover new things.

There are many ways to keep your dog active and creative, including simple training sessions, puzzles, and games.  You don’t have to buy everything in the market. A few toys and brief training sessions are enough.

Cleanliness

Your dog does not realize that the garbage can is not a treasure trove of goodies. Food scraps, wrappers, cleaning supplies, and other items can be harmful if your puppy gets ahold of them. It is best to store them behind closed doors, inside locked cupboards, or in other locked places.

Take into account foods that can be dangerous to dogs, including chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, and garlic. It may also be useful to get a garbage can that has a locking system. It helps keep the trash away, as dogs can be very crafty, especially if they smell something appealing. While you are cleaning the house, make sure that you have not left any cleaning products or chemicals lying around.

Develop a Routine

Establishing a clear schedule can help puppies develop routines for mealtimes, potty breaks, naps, playtime, and training, and sleep. For example, you can make a plan for your puppy’s early morning to include a walk, their meal, playtime and a nap afterwards. This routine can make house training easier as well.

Endnote

Making the changes listed above can yield great results for you and your puppy. Don’t forget that mistakes are inevitable. Your new friend is likely to chew on something they’re not allowed to, or walk over the house with dirty paws. All these situations are natural and can be corrected over time.
