Preventing Cancer: What Every Young Person Needs to Know

Cancer. Just hearing the word can feel like a punch to the gut. But what if I told you that it’s not just a disease of the elderly anymore? Over the past three decades, early-onset cancer rates have skyrocketed, with a staggering 80% increase from 1990 to 2019. This is no longer just a statistic. It’s a wake-up call.

In 2024, the American Cancer Society predicts over 2 million new cancer diagnoses in the U.S. alone, with a significant portion affecting younger individuals. And it’s not just one type of cancer; digestive system cancers like colon cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, uterine cancer, and lung cancers are all on the rise. Colorectal cancer, in particular, has become a leading cause of cancer deaths among men under 50 and is rising alarmingly among young women.

So, what’s driving this unsettling trend? And more importantly, what can we do to protect ourselves and our families?


The Western Lifestyle: A Perfect Storm

It’s no coincidence that early-onset cancer is most prevalent in high-income countries like the U.S., Australia, and Western Europe. The adoption of the Western diet and lifestyle, characterized by ultra-processed foods, sedentary habits, and widespread exposure to environmental toxins, has created a perfect storm for rising cancer rates. These lifestyle factors don’t just influence individual health; they’ve created a public health crisis. Research consistently connects these behaviors to an alarming increase in cancer cases, particularly among younger populations.

The Role of Ultra-Processed Foods

A study published in The Lancet revealed a troubling relationship between ultra-processed foods and cancer. For every 10% increase in ultra-processed food consumption, the risk of cancer rises:

  • 13% higher overall risk

  • 11% higher risk of breast cancer

  • 30% higher risk of colon cancer

  • 50% higher risk of pancreatic cancer

Considering that the average American diet consists of 60% ultra-processed foods, it’s not hard to see why the U.S. faces such a significant cancer burden.

Backing this up, a 2024 review in The BMJ linked ultra-processed food consumption to a higher risk of serious health problems, including cancer, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes. For cancer specifically, the study found a significant increase in risk among those with higher ultra-processed food exposure, along with 21% higher risk of death from all causes, 66% higher risk of heart disease-related death, and 55% higher risk of obesity. Those numbers are staggering.

Chronic Inflammation and Accelerated Aging

Chronic low-grade inflammation is often called the "silent killer." It’s driven by poor dietary choices, stress, lack of exercise, and toxin exposure. This chronic state of inflammation weakens the immune system, promotes tumor growth, and damages DNA. Simply put, inflammation creates the perfect environment for cancer cells to thrive.

Inflammation also accelerates biological aging (often called “inflammaging”), a major risk factor for cancer. A 2021 study from the University of Washington found that people born after 1965 are experiencing faster cellular aging, making them more vulnerable to cancers like lung, gastrointestinal (GI), and uterine cancers. Researchers attribute much of this risk to the cumulative effects of lifestyle and environmental factors over time.

Environmental Toxins: The Unseen Threat

The average person is exposed to over 100,000 chemicals in daily life, many of which disrupt hormones, damage DNA, and drive inflammation. These toxins are hiding in everyday products and environments, with some of the most harmful being:

  • Plastics: BPA, phthalates (found in containers, cosmetics, and food packaging) disrupt hormones and fertility.

  • Pesticides: Glyphosate (in crops), chlorpyrifos, malathion (linked to cancer, neurological issues).

  • Heavy Metals: Mercury (found in fish), lead (old paint, pipes), and cadmium (tobacco, food) cause organ damage.

  • Air Pollutants: PM2.5 (from cars, factories) and benzene (from smoke, industry) lead to respiratory and heart problems. Find out what to do about air pollutants here.

  • Flame Retardants: PBDEs (in furniture, electronics) linked to hormone disruption and cancer.

  • Industrial Chemicals: PFOA (in non-stick cookware) and TCE (in cleaning products) cause liver damage and cancer.

Lifestyle Habits That Fuel Cancer

  1. Excess Sugar and Starch Intake: Cancer cells have an uncanny ability to thrive on glucose, which they use as a primary fuel source. Diets high in sugar and refined starches can elevate blood glucose levels, potentially fueling the growth and spread of tumors by providing cancer cells with the energy they need to multiply.

  2. Sedentary Behavior: Leading a sedentary lifestyle doesn’t just contribute to weight gain; it also increases chronic inflammation in the body, which can weaken the immune system’s ability to detect and fight off cancerous cells. Without regular physical activity, the body’s natural defenses are impaired, making it easier for cancer cells to evade detection and grow uncontrollably.

  3. Alcohol Consumption: Alcohol is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the World Health Organization, meaning it has been proven to directly cause cancer in humans. Even at moderate levels, alcohol consumption has been linked to a heightened risk of several types of cancer, including breast and colorectal cancers, as it interferes with the body’s ability to metabolize certain nutrients and produces compounds that can damage DNA.

  4. Vitamin D Deficiency: Vitamin D is crucial not only for bone health but also for regulating cell growth, and its deficiency has been associated with an increased risk of various cancers, including breast, colorectal, and prostate cancer. Low levels of vitamin D can compromise the immune system, impairing its ability to fight off abnormal cell growth and potentially allowing cancer cells to develop more easily.

  5. Chronic Stress: Chronic stress has a profound impact on the body’s hormonal and immune systems, which can influence cancer development. Stress leads to the continuous release of cortisol, a hormone that, when elevated for extended periods, can suppress immune function and encourage inflammation, both of which can create an environment conducive to the growth of cancerous cells.

The Good News: You Have Control

While these trends are alarming, they are not irreversible. Research shows that 30-50% of cancers are preventable through lifestyle changes. Here’s how you can start reclaiming control of your health:

1. Clean Up Your Diet

  • Prioritize whole, unprocessed foods.

  • Increase fiber intake to 30-50 grams daily to promote a healthy gut microbiome.

  • Focus on anti-inflammatory foods like leafy greens, berries, nuts, seeds, and fatty fish.

  • Reduce your consumption of ultra-processed foods, sugar, and refined grains.

2. Exercise Regularly

  • Aim for 150 minutes of moderate activity or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise per week.

  • Not sure where to start? Hit the minimum effective dose of exercise in each of these categories.

  • Physical activity reduces inflammation, improves blood sugar regulation, and strengthens your immune system.

3. Get Screened Early

  • Colorectal Cancer: Begin screenings at age 45 for those at average risk. If you have a family history or other risk factors, discuss with your doctor about starting earlier.

  • Breast Cancer: Women should start annual mammograms at age 40, or earlier if there’s a family history or genetic predisposition (e.g., BRCA mutation).

  • Cervical Cancer: Begin pap smears and HPV testing at age 21, and continue every 3 years until age 29. After age 30, it’s recommended to combine pap smears with HPV testing every 5 years.

  • Prostate Cancer: Men should discuss prostate cancer screening with their healthcare provider starting at age 50, or earlier if they have risk factors such as a family history.

  • Skin Cancer: Start regular skin checks at any age, especially if you have a history of excessive sun exposure or a family history of melanoma. Adults should schedule skin exams with their doctor annually.

  • Lung Cancer: For individuals aged 55-80 with a history of smoking (current or former smoker), discuss low-dose CT scans with your doctor to screen for lung cancer.

  • Oral Cancer: Regular oral cancer screenings should begin at age 18 during dental checkups, especially for those who use tobacco or consume alcohol regularly.

  • Ovarian Cancer: While there is no standard screening for ovarian cancer, women with a family history of ovarian or breast cancer or genetic mutations (such as BRCA) should discuss their screening options with their doctor.

4. Reduce Toxic Exposure

  • Install an RO Water System: Filter out contaminants from your drinking water for cleaner hydration.

  • Avoid Heating Plastic: Switch to glass or stainless steel to prevent harmful chemicals from leaching.

  • Use an Air Purifier: Improve air quality by filtering out allergens and toxins in your home.

  • Go Organic (Dirty Dozen): Choose organic produce, especially for high-pesticide items like strawberries and spinach.

  • Use Non-Toxic Cleaning Products: Opt for natural cleaners made from vinegar, baking soda, or essential oils.

  • Switch to Safer Personal Care Products: Choose personal care items free from parabens, phthalates, and synthetic chemicals.

  • Choose Non-Toxic Baby Products: Select safer toys and products to limit your baby’s exposure to chemicals.

  • Use Glass or Stainless Steel Bottles: Replace plastic bottles to avoid BPA and other toxins.

  • Avoid Chemical Air Fresheners: Use essential oils or natural scents instead of synthetic air fresheners.

  • Avoid Non-Stick Cookware: Use stainless steel, cast iron, or ceramic pans to avoid toxic chemicals.

  • Use Chemical-Free Laundry Detergents: Switch to plant-based detergents and avoid dryer sheets.

5. Supplement Wisely

  • Vitamin D3: Maintain blood levels of at least 40-50 ng/mL.

  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: These reduce inflammation and support overall health. These are the best fish to eat.

  • Probiotics: Promote gut health, which is closely linked to cancer prevention.

  • Antioxidants: Found in green tea, turmeric, and dark leafy greens, these combat free radical damage.

6. Practice Intermittent Fasting

  • Try fasting for 14-16 hours overnight several times a week. This activates autophagy, your body’s natural process for removing damaged cells and reducing cancer risk.

Takeaway

The rise in cancer rates, particularly among younger generations, is a sobering reminder of the consequences of modern lifestyles. But this isn’t an inevitability. By addressing root causes, chronic inflammation, toxin exposure, poor diet, and inactivity, you can significantly reduce your risk.
