A new character stands in Silvermoon at level 1, in starter cloth, and the main waits on the other side of the login screen with a full bank. The part that surprises people comes at that bank. The same World of Warcraft gold the main earned is already there for the alt to use. An alt’s budget is mostly a question of which resources travel and which stay behind, and of how fast the new character can start paying for itself. This guide follows the gold from level 1 to the first full week of a second character, with Midnight as the example.
What Travels Between Characters
Icy Veins’ Warbands guide explains the shared parts. The Warband Bank holds gold, items and reagents for every character on the account. Gear marked Warbound until equipped can be dropped there for another character to wear. Currencies labelled Warband Transferable can be sent between characters for a fee, while season-specific ones, crests among them, cannot.
Storage is the first big bill. When the guide was written for The War Within, it priced the five Warband Bank tabs from 1,000 gold up to 2,500,000, which comes to 3,126,000 for all of them. Those numbers belong to that expansion and may change, but the shape of the cost is the lesson: the first tabs are small sums and the last ones are a long-term goal. A player weighing a later tab can put its cost next to the WoW gold price and the number of evenings it would take to farm the same amount.
Reagents travel the same way: a stack gathered for one profession can be picked up by whichever character needs it.
Because gold sits in a shared bank, buying wow gold for one character feeds a pool that every alt can draw on. Nobody has to decide in advance which character will need it.
Leveling: The Cheap Part
Leveling an alt costs little gold, and the difference between routes is mostly time. The guide mentioned above says each level 80 character in The War Within gave the account’s alts a 5% experience bonus, up to 25%. In Midnight, Wowhead’s alt leveling route, published in March 2026, put a level 90 alt at about four to five hours. It leans on War Mode’s 15% bonus and on First Time Profession Crafting, which Wowhead says is worth around 75% of a level, with Tailoring named as one of the cheapest options.
In terms of WoW Midnight gold, this is the stage where an alt costs the least. The money question starts after the level cap.
A Thin Week, Three Characters
A main with two alts shares one week between three characters. Delves for the alt, a key for the main and a look at each Vault on reset. Some weeks the schedule simply does not stretch that far, and one of the three runs short on gold or on time.
When that happens, a small amount of WoW gold can cover the shortfall for the character that needs it, and the evenings stay on the content only a player can do.
Farming Gold With an Alt
An alt that reaches the cap can earn its own money, and the first question is which profession to give it. Icy Veins’ article on profession picks, from February 2026, puts Mining, Herbalism and Skinning at the very top of the list. The reason is the Auction House: gathering materials to sell there makes a lot of gold.
An Icy Veins article on gold-making from September 2026 lists the other routes a player can work in parallel:
World quests
Weekly caches
Concentration crafting
Cross-realm Auction House flipping
Efficient gathering techniques
The article names these but gives no yields for any of them, so none of the methods comes with a promised hourly figure.
Gather or Craft
Every profession choice for an alt is a choice between two ways of working:
Consumables deserve a closer look, because raiders and Mythic+ players rely on them. Icy Veins’ Alchemy guide, written for Dragonflight, says Alchemy creates most of the consumables used at the end of the game. The same guide warns that the consumable market fills up quickly, with potions worth only slightly more than the materials in them, while items with better margins are harder to sell. The principle outlasts the expansion: a crafted consumable earns when demand beats supply, and not just because it is useful.
The Auction House: Where the Main’s Surplus Goes
The Auction House is not only for the alt’s own finds. The main usually carries more than it needs, and that surplus is the cheapest source of money for a new character.
People who search for “WoW gold sell” usually want one of two things: a way to turn surplus into gold, or the going rate. The first has an in-game answer, and the proceeds land in the same Warband Bank, so the alt can use them straight away.
Candidates for the listing:
Materials that the alt’s professions will never use.
Crafted pieces from the main’s professions.
Old consumables that no longer fit current content.
Flipping, which means buying low and selling higher across realms, is on Icy Veins’ list as well. It needs starting capital, because a flip ties up gold until the item sells, and players without that cushion sometimes look at World of Warcraft gold for sale to fund the first few flips.
Upgrades Cost Crests, Not Gold
Gear is the opposite case to storage. According to Icy Veins’ gear upgrading guide for Midnight Season 2, each rank from 2 to 6 costs 20 crests, so a full climb of one piece takes 100, and the weekly crest cap is also 100. The gold part is described as small.
A full climb of one piece therefore fills a week of crests, whatever the bank holds. Players who decide to buy WoW gold for an alt should expect it to cover the small gold part of upgrades and nothing more, because the crests set the pace.
The Question Before the First Purchase
Every alt reaches the same crossroads.
Sooner or later someone in guild chat asks what the best place to buy WoW gold is. The answer starts earlier, with a target. Is it storage, a stack of materials for the first profession, or a round of upgrades? A named target gives a number, and a number turns the question into a short shopping list.
The same chat is where the cheap answers live, like which profession sells best this month.
Seasons change the picture again. At the start of one, every alt on the roster needs the same round of upgrades, and WoW gold for sale becomes one of the choices on the list. Making that call once for the whole roster, not once per character, keeps the plan simple.
